BEATNIK JOINS SYMBIAN COMPANION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMME

Enables Delivery of Integrated Beatnik Audio Engine software to Symbian OS licensees

Symbian Exposium, London – April 29, 2003 -- Beatnik, a leading provider of open standards-based structured audio software solutions for mobile devices, today announced that reference implementations of Beatnik's mobileBAE audio software will be included with Symbian OS deliveries to licensees. Through the new Symbian Companion Technology Programme, Beatnik will provide handset manufacturers producing Symbian OS phones an easy and low risk mechanism to evaluate mobileBAE and experience the rich musical ringtone, game sound and music clip delivery opportunities it brings to their device. Symbian develops and licenses Symbian OS, the global industry standard for advanced mobile phones, to the world's leading handset manufacturers.

The Symbian Companion Technology Programme is designed to stimulate and promote innovation by offering Symbian OS licensees, which include Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Siemens and Sony Ericsson, a wide range of pre-integrated and pre-validated technologies to reduce handset time-to-market and commercial risk. The partners offering companion technologies will license their software directly to handset manufacturers should the licensees decide to integrate it with their products.

Beatnik's mobileBAE software provides support for the latest open standard eXtensible Music Format (XMF) files that allow digital samples of sounds, instruments or vocals to be combined with synthesised instruments in generating high fidelity polyphonic audio. XMF content allows users to experience CD quality audio for ringtones, game sound effects and music clips in a format that can easily be delivered to handsets via a wireless interface.

"The inclusion of Beatnik's mobileBAE support in the delivery to Symbian OS licensees will help Symbian partners to effectively evaluate and ultimately implement the most optimised audio software solution for their products. Through the Companion Technology Programme, we look forward to working more closely with Symbian to help create innovative solutions and ways to help drive even greater demand for Symbian OS phones," said Jeremy Copp, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing at Beatnik.

"The Companion Technology Programme provides our licensees with fast and low risk access to our partners' latest added-value technologies," said Ian Weston, VP, Developer Partnerships of Symbian. "Beatnik will enable our licensees to easily integrate mobileBAE, an enhanced audio software solution, within their mobile phone designs."
