SAMSUNG SINGS TO BEATNIK'S TUNE ON NEW MULTIMEDIA PHONES

Beatnik Audio Engine to power awesome audio playback, musical ringtones and digital samples in Samsung multimedia mobile phones

Symbian Exposium, London – April 29, 2003 -- Beatnik, Inc., the leading provider of structured audio software solutions for mobile devices, today announced that Samsung has licensed the Beatnik Audio Engine for inclusion in a range of its upcoming multimedia mobile phones. The world's fastest growing mobile phone manufacturer chose to integrate Beatnik's technology for its ability to play open industry standard audio formats such as SP-MIDI and XMF. The XMF format can deliver authentic digital samples including artists' voices and game sound effects, as well as high quality MIDI instrumentation.

Unlike other audio solutions, the Beatnik Audio Engine (BAE) generates sounds that have been created from samples of real instruments and voices, allowing consumers to enjoy full, rich, high-fidelity audio on their mobile phones. It also provides a wide array of functionality designed specifically to enhance interactive applications such as music delivery services, ringtones, phone alerts, multimedia messaging and game sounds.

"Multimedia is of key interest to Samsung in delivering our goal of digital convergence," said Andy Park, Vice President, R&D, Samsung Electronics. "The Beatnik Audio Engine is a highly flexible and cost effective solution that helps us to provide our customers with a complete high fidelity audio experience - with both today's and tomorrow's audio standards."

"Samsung's decision to use the Beatnik Audio Engine in its multimedia phones means that consumers will soon be able enjoy the same quality audio from their phones as they do from their hi-fi systems at home," said Jeremy Copp, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Beatnik. "And as the mobile entertainment industry standardises around the XMF format, they will also benefit from some of the best audio services and audio-enhanced applications available anywhere."

Beatnik's small footprint, scaleable software engine supports the real time synthesis of high quality polyphonic audio. As a complete audio subsystem, the BAE incorporates a synthesiser, mixer, sample rate converter, linear audio player and support for MIDI, SP-MIDI, XMF, RMF, and WAV file formats. This gives users full control over all sounds produced by their mobile phone, allowing full audio personalisation.
