MORE THAN ONE MILLION POLYPHONISTS NOW ENJOY BEATNIK AUDIO ON THEIR MOBILE PHONES

Beatnik-powered polyphonic ringtones, game sounds and audio services in daily use on Danger HipTop, Nokia 7650, Nokia 7210, Nokia 3510

San Mateo, CA – December 3rd, 2002 - Beatnik, Inc., a leading provider of standards-based structured audio software solutions for mobile devices, today announced that the Beatnik Audio Engine™ (BAE™) is now in use by over one million owners* of the Nokia 7650 mobile phone, in addition to the hundreds of thousands of users of the Nokia 3510, Danger HipTop and Nokia 7210 mobile phones. The BAE has been developed to be compatible with a wide range of mobile phone platforms, including Nokia’s Series 60 platform, projected by Nokia to sell 10m units in 2003.**

Since the introduction of the Nokia 3510 in March 2002, the Beatnik Audio Engine has allowed mobile phone users around the world to banish irritating electronic bleeps and monophonic rings from their lives. Standards-based polyphonic audio enables users to enjoy high quality, high-fidelity musical ringtones, game sounds, multimedia messages, and user interface sounds, and alongside colour screens, is rapidly becoming a standard feature of new mobile phones.

“The first generation of phone personalisation products – logos, covers, monophonic ringtones – is well established in the market, but limited in scope,” said Jeremy Copp, senior vice president, sales and marketing at Beatnik. “But in the last six months, well over a million polyphonists have converted to the next generation of phone personalisation – polyphonic audio – a clear sign that the BAE is rapidly becoming an industry standard.”

“Our estimates suggest that in Western Europe alone, Nokia shipped more than half a million Series 60 phones in Q3,” said Tim Mui, research analyst for IDC’s European Smart Handheld Devices team. “High quality audio services are a key element of the appeal of this type of device, and we predict strong growth in this sector next year.”
