BEATNIK POWERS POLYPHONIC RINGTONES ON
THE
NOKIA 3510
Next generation audio comes to mass market
phones
powered by the Beatnik Audio Engine software solution
Hannover, Germany - March 13, 2002 - Beatnik, Inc.,
a leading provider of open, standards-based structured audio
software solutions for mobile devices, today announced that
the Nokia 3510, Nokia's first polyphonic ringtone-capable
mobile phone, will incorporate the Beatnik Audio Engine
(BAE) as the core sound engine for audio on the handset.
Beatnik's support for open standards, such as MIDI and SP-MIDI,
allows content developers to create ringtones and advanced
audio elements for games, user interface alerts and multimedia
messages.
The BAE player embedded in the 3510 is the latest solution
to be developed by Beatnik in partnership with Nokia. Beatnik
has already demonstrated the BAE solution running on a number
of other Nokia devices, including the Nokia 9210 Communicator
and the Nokia 9290 Communicator. Beatnik's flexible software
technology can be applied across a range of mobile phones
and PDAs, offering significant cost reductions to manufacturers
over alternative hardware-based MIDI solutions.
"Despite their limited audio quality and range, customisable
ringtones have generated considerable revenue for service
providers," said Thomas Dolby Robertson, Founder and
Chief Beatnik. "The BAE running on the 3510 dramatically
improves the quality of these tones, making them sound much
closer to the sample-rich sounds of today's pop and dance
music. This can also benefit network operators by enabling
them to rapidly turn on new revenue streams, through the
provision of advanced audio services."

of its audio capabilities may be found at www.nokia.com.
