BEATNIK'S RICH AUDIO TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE
TO ENHANCE SOUND FOR SYMBIAN OS DEVICES, INCLUDING NOKIA
9210 AND 9290 MOBILE PHONES
Beatnik Audio Engine Enables Polyphonic
Ring Tones, Game Sound and Multimedia Messaging For Symbian
OS
SAN MATEO, CA - November 20, 2001 - Beatnik, Inc.,
a leading provider of structured audio software solutions
for mobile devices, today announced that the Beatnik Audio
Engine (BAE) has been closely integrated with
the Symbian OS to enable enhanced polyphonic ring tones,
game sounds and multimedia messaging. Beatnik has produced
a demonstration of the technology for the Nokia 9210 and
Nokia 9290 mobile phones.
Leading the open standards initiative, Beatnik is providing
eXtensible Music Format (XMF) compatible audio
capabilities for mobile phones to significantly improve
the user experience through high quality sound. The BAE
is a flexible and configurable software solution ideal for
integration with the resource-constrained environments of
current day mobile phones. The Symbian OS represents one
of a number of environments supported by the BAE and has
been licensed by the leading mobile device manufacturers
including Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, Panasonic, Psion, Sanyo,
Siemens and Sony. Nokia expects half of their third generation
(3G) mobile phones to be based upon the Symbian OS by 2004
according to Jorma Ollila, Chief Executive of Nokia.
"In our desire to enrich the musical experience for
all mobile phone users, we are delighted that we will be
able to offer users a true rich audio experience in our
Symbian OS based devices thanks to the Beatnik technology
solution," said Anssi Vanjoki, executive vice president,
Nokia Mobile Phones. "Beatnik is one of the many companies
we are working with to continuously shape the Mobile Information
Society."
"Beatnik's proprietary technology significantly improves
the sonic quality and musical variety of ring tones, at
the same time enhancing mobile games and personal messaging
capabilities," said Thomas Dolby Robertson, Chief Beatnik.
"Today's ring tones are usually monophonic - playing
just one note at a time. Ring tones utilizing Beatnik's
technology play four to 16 notes simultaneously, and can
use real samples, not just beeps. It'll give you a slew
of new ways to annoy the heck out of your friends and colleagues!"
The Beatnik Audio Engine is available today to license
to mobile device manufacturers and software platform providers.
BAE enabled devices allow the delivery of rich musical ring
tone services and peer-to-peer multimedia messaging, offering
increased revenue opportunities for the wireless industry.
Mobile device users will have access to a wide range of
custom audio and music content, audio enabled applications
and services. The Beatnik Audio Engine within a Symbian
OS based mobile device provides an interactive audio resource
that can be used by all applications on the device, enabling
a richer user experience. As an example, interactive games
applications will be able to deliver realistic sound effects
and audio cues as well as graphical output.
"The device market has discovered the critical importance
of delivering high-quality audio solutions to consumers
and has become increasingly fashion and youth driven. The
market for ring tones and logos that personalize a user's
phone has exploded over recent months," said Lorraine
Hariton, president and CEO of Beatnik. "Beatnik is
leading the way in providing a complete polyphonic audio
solution for handset manufacturers to enable next generation
services."
The BAE enables users to experience instantaneous high-quality
audio using extremely small file sizes. The BAE is a hardware-independent
software solution that provides a complete audio sub-system
including a wavetable synthesizer & sequencer, effects
processor and stereo mixer. The BAE can play back and mix
popular formats such as XMF, MP3, WAV, AIFF and MIDI. The
BAE enhances MIDI by adding custom samples to recreate the
original sound of the music or audio. It also circumvents
many of the piracy concerns associated with file formats
such as MP3 and MIDI by the use of a proprietary Beatnik
security mechanism.
